Madrid Design Festival returns every February with a programme of exhibitions, installations, open showrooms, workshops, forums and talks. With the virus largely under control in China, the country's biggest contemporary design fair was eventually able to take place in November, following two previous postponements. But it wasn't a scaled-down affair – the show was larger than ever before, having switched to a more spacious new venue. Open House is an architecture festival that operates in 43 cities around the world, giving the public an opportunity to visit great buildings of the past and present.

This is a rare chance to see graphic designers actually talk about one of the most terrifying parts of their jobs. As graphic designers, we are all too aware of how typefaces can make or break a design. For some of us, choosing the right fonts takes the most effort and care – even more than the concept.
Marking the introduction of the first Valextra Spa repair, cleaning and polishing service, a life-size wellness center is being mounted inside the store as part of the overall installation, housing artisans at work. Tongue-in-cheek merchandise — including towels, sleeping masks and aluminum trays — has been developed by Studio Temp to mark the initiative. Miu Miu is opting for a cultural approach and promoting literature and the arts with its activation during the week. The brand will introduce its inaugural Literary Club “Writing Life,” a two-day event spotlighting the work of the late Italian writers and poets Sibilla Aleramo and Alba De Céspedes.
With so much of the exhibition centred around sound, visitors were asked to bring their own headphones and plug them into sockets dotted around the exhibits. In this way, they could fully immerse themselves in the varied exhibits, which included a life-size animation produced by the Chemical Brothers (pictured) and drum machine desk created by Yuri Suzuki and Jeff Mills. Another London event that cleverly responded to the Covid-19 threat was Electronic, an exhibition at the Design Museum exploring the evolution of electronic music and its relationship with design. In addition to becoming the future home of the Colburn Orchestra, the concert hall—which will be the only mid-size hall in downtown Los Angeles—will provide flexible configurations to accommodate a full orchestra, operas and large musical theater productions. On April 5, the Colburn School celebrated the groundbreaking of a 100,000-sq-ft expansion designed by Frank Gehry. Dubbed the Colburn Center, the new building will be located adjacent to Colburn’s Grand Avenue campus.
This conference is an extension of that interest and looks at what design can do for the metaverse. The speakers and participants of the conference are poised to conduct workshops and discussions on user research, service design, UX, and innovation. To augment your design portfolio and to ensure you have a working role on different levels of the branding project, it’s important to understand things like information architecture, user experience, and content strategy. If you have had enough creative discussions and want some practical advice and real-life tales on what goes on after a design brief is shared, this is a design festival you don’t want to miss. Type Drives Culture is an international conference where you can meet designers across the world who take type as seriously as you do.
